2010.07.12 Arrival in Kansai, Long Bus Ride to Kyoto

This was the best picture I could grab right after landing at Kansai due to the rush to get through immigration. Aside from the sinking issue, it's seems to be a very well designed airport. Kansai International may be the longest building in the world but, compared to HNL (Honolulu International) it didn't feel like it at all.

This ended up being my dinner after I finally got my rental phone.

Silly me went to the departures counter to get my phone despite making arrangements to pick it up on the ground floor arrivals counter. My fault for neglecting to bring or even print out any of my paperwork.

Went outside and the sweat started rolling! Bus ride seemed to go on forever and there were so many bright flashy pachinko parlors that could be seen from the freeway! Unfortunately, none of the pictures came out.

Switched to a taxi to get from Kyoto station to the hotel, got a much needed shower then went out to explore the neighborhood for a bit and get food for breakfast.

Even though the concept of a convenience store may be American, the Japanese have adopted it and perfected it. There are conbeni everywhere! So convenient! If you thought there were a lot of ABC stores in Waikiki, the amount and variety of conbeni in Japan will blow you away! On top of that 9 times out of 10 they will have a restroom that you can use instead of making up some lie that they don't have one!

Even more amazing is that the prices are on par with a supermarket and the food is actually worth eating. It's a mystery why the Japanese have not run into an obesity epidemic yet. They might walk a lot more but when every block seems to have at least 2 conbeni, they are not lacking for temptation around every corner.
